Headline : Red-eyed tree frog takes a nap
Caption : A Red-eyed tree frog (Agalychnis callidryas) takes a big stretch before settling down for a nap on a branch in Limón Province, Costa Rica. These colourful amphibians have nictitating membranes that cover their eyes when they sleep.

The gold, vein-like structures of the membrane provide protection and camouflage while allowing enough light in to detect any approaching predators.

While sleeping, it also pulls its legs inward to cover the bright coloration on its sides and also to hide its brightly coloured toes.

If startled during their snooze, the frog will uncover its bright colourful markings which will make it appear poisonous to the predator (although red-eyed tree frogs are not actually poisonous).
