Caption : Hotel staff and guests placed in quarantine
Staff and guests at Hong Kong's Metropark Hotel have been placed in quarantine after it emerged China's first victim of swine flu had stayed at the venue.
A 25-year-old man from Mexico, where the virus is thought to have originated, displayed symptoms of the disease after travelling to Shanghai on 29 April (09). He then flew to Hong Kong, where he was taken ill.
His hospitalisation has prompted authorities to enforce strict health checks and cordons in all the places the infected man visited, including the hotel, where the male checked in upon his arrival.
About 100 members of Metropark staff and 200 guests have been banned from leaving the hotel for one week, until 7 May (09).
Police are guarding the quarantined hotel in a bid to reduce the risk of others contracting the disease, while only medical workers, fully kitted out with face masks and hospital gowns, have been allowed in to examine those held on the premises.
The health crisis has already claimed the lives of more than 100 people in Mexico City. (MT/WN)
