When Bob Geldof announced in 1985 that he was planning a global series of concerts to boost famine relief efforts in Ethiopia, few could have imagined the impact it would have.
But after near-superhuman efforts by Geldof and fellow rocker Midge Ure to organise the event, when July 13th rolled around that year, almost 200,000 people came together in London, Philadelphia, Germany and Australia to witness history being made.
At Wembley Stadium and the JFK Stadium in Philadelphia, the biggest rock acts in the world - including The Who, Queen, and Madonna - performed in sweltering heat.
The event, dubbed the "global jukebox", was also beamed into homes in more than 60 countries, attracting an estimated 2 billion TV viewers.
The satellite link-up between the UK, US and the rest of the world was the most ambitious international television venture ever attempted.
By the time the event closed with a mass onstage singalong on both sides of the Atlantic, it was clear history had been made - and it was later estimated that Live Aid had pulled in an incredible £150 million for famine relief.
As the 25th anniversary of the event looms this week, we take a look at some of the acts who wowed the crowds on that sweltering July day...
