Robot mules will be joining soldiers on the battlefield following the U.S. Army’s order of 624 eight-wheel drive robotic vehicles.

The Defense Department announced on 30 October a contract has been awarded to General Dynamics Land Systems for their Multi-Utility Tactical Transport (MUTT).

According to Defense News, the initial agreement totals “$162.4 million and includes support hardware, user training and technical support”.

Four companies competed to build a Squad Multipurpose Equipment Transport (SMET) vehicle, with a purpose to reduce the load carried by soldiers in the field.

The compact vehicles would move with troops across challenging terrain and would be required to carry at least 1,000 pounds of equipment for 60 miles over three days.
