Headline : Converse Chuck Taylor Renew Line Debuts All-Stars Made From Recycled Materials
Caption : Your Chuck Taylors will soon be made with materials that have been, well, chucked. Converse has announced a new tier of its iconic sneakers, redesigned for sustainability.

The new ‘Renew’ series will feature footwear created out of post-consumer and post-industrial waste through new manufacturing methods in hopes of giving “literal tons of waste a second life,” the company reveals in a press statement.

Starting with Converse’s signature ‘All Stars’, the ‘Renew’ collection will encompass three processes: used PET bottles (‘Renew Canvas’), upcycled textiles (‘Renew Denim’), and old cotton-canvas blends (‘Renew Cotton’).

The ‘Renew Canvas’ range promises “the same feel and look” as Converse’s canvas material, but is more eco-conscious as it repurposes used plastic bottles to make 100-percent recycled polyester.

The ‘Renew Denim’ series upcycles denim jeans picked up from landfills. Moving forward, Converse will apply the in-house technique of ‘Renew Denim’ to transform single-source textiles into ‘Chuck Taylor All Stars’ or ‘Chuck 70’ shoes.

The ‘Renew Cotton’ designs are composed of cotton-canvas waste converted into a new form of yarn made of 40-percent recycled cotton with polyester. “In future seasons, additional recycled blends will be explored,” Converse adds.

The recycled PET-based series will roll out on 5 July, and will debut on ‘Chuck Taylor All Stars’ and ‘Chuck 70s’. A ‘Chuck 70’ made of preloved denim jeans will be available in August, while the ‘Renew Cotton’ silhouettes will arrive in early 2020.
