Giraffe populations have been in decline since the mid 80's and there are now less than 100,000 across Africa with nine different species.

British wildlife photographer Paul Goldstein has spent decades enjoying their company and has photographed them from the plains to the deserts.

The Wimbledon-based guide for Exodus Travel (www.exodus.co.uk ) says: “Giraffes are peaceful animals: iconic sentinels that embroider any safari. To see one on the horizon is to witness a sight that has changed little for centuries. They are the tallest animal in the world and one of the heaviest, feeding mainly on leaves from trees. Sadly, due to deforestation, encroachment, poaching and hunting they are on the decline and governments need to act appropriately to arrest this fall. The thought of some 'brave' hunter shooting one of these animals all in the name of sport is frankly despicable, I wonder how these abhorrent 'characters' sleep at night.”

Paul Goldstein co-owns Kicheche Camps (www.kicheche.com) in Kenya and guides for Exodus travels.
