Headline : Grocery Store Designs Embarrassing Plastic Bags To Combat Plastic Waste
Caption : A Vancouver grocery store has printed embarrassing slogans on its plastic bags in a bid to stop its customers from using them.

Customers who don’t bring their own bags to the East West Market will instead have to carry their grocery home in bags reading 'The Colon Care co-op', 'Into the Weird Adult Video Emporium' and ‘Dr. Toews’ Wart Ointment Wholesale’.

David Lee Kwen, the shop’s owner, insisted that the plan wasn’t to embarrass customers. “We wanted to give them something humorous, but also something that made them think at the same time,” he told the Guardian.

“It’s human nature not to want to be told what to do.”

The bags are meant to force customers to think twice about consumption habits. In a social media post, the store points out that millions of plastic bags are used once before being discarded – and are part of growing problem of plastic waste.

According to Greenpeace Canada, Canadians generate about 3.25 million tonnes of plastic waste, or about 140,000 garbage trucks’ worth each year.

The bags are limited edition so they won’t be around for long – but they have certainly generated conversation and awareness about single-use plastic.
