* VERTIGO TOPPLES CITIZEN KANE AS BEST FILM
ALFRED HITCHCOCK's classic 1958 thriller VERTIGO has ended CITIZEN KANE's choke hold on top of the British Film Institute's best film list.
BFI bosses poll experts once a decade and their latest survey has thrown up a new winner - for the first time in 50 years.
More than 840 film buffs and academics took part in the poll, which will be published in the September (12) issue of the Institute's Sight & Sound magazine.
Citizen Kane came in second in the new countdown and Yasujiro Ozu's Tokyo Story is third.
In a separate Sight & Sound magazine poll, featuring voting from 358 top film directors, Tokyo Story was named the Greatest Film of All Time. Citizen Kane tied for second with 2001: A Space Odyssey. Vertigo was seventh. (KL/WNWC/MT)
