Headline : George Michael’s Former Santa Barbara Home Up For Sale For $6 Million
Caption : George Michael’s former Santa Barbara home is up for sale for just under $6 million.

Nestled into Santa Barbara’s seaside mountains, the modern retreat is the stuff of California dreams.

Designed in 1985 by Cliff Hickman, an architect inspired by all things Frank Lloyd Wright, the five-bedroom, six-bathroom home was once the getaway for pop star George Michael.

The 4,840-square-foot house makes the most of its surroundings with a hexagonal shape that grants views onto the mountains, ocean, and city below. In the center of the home, a stone chimney rises to the ceiling like a tent pole, separating the great room and a large kitchen that’s custom built for entertaining.

Large windows wrap around the exterior of the house and peer onto an expansive terrace that hovers above a pool patio below. The property also includes a guest house, sauna, and a private tennis court for taking advantage of the city’s perpetually perfect weather.

The home was built by mostly self-taught designer Cliff Hickman, whose background is a story in its own right.

A student of engineering, art, and architecture, Hickman was an avid aficionado of Frank Lloyd Wright. At the age of 23, he dropped out of school, moved to Santa Barbara, and, with money borrowed from his parents, purchased a 1/3-acre parcel on the Riviera.

Over the next four years, he undertook the ultimate DIY project: designing and building a house almost entirely by hand, even hauling all of the dirt himself by wheelbarrow.

Hickman went on to design many other local homes, including the two residences on either side of this original Riviera home. The home at 2211 Mount Calvary Road, which belonged to George, is one of his subsequent projects.

Michael owned the house from 1989 to 2006. The house has had a different owner since then.

2211 Mount Calvary Road in Santa Barbara has been listed at $5,995,000 with Kirk Hodson and Jon-Ryan Scholbohm of Compass.
