Headline : Somervell Ice Axe to be Auctioned
Caption : Nick Bowkett, Director/Auctioneer at Stroud Auction Rooms in Gloucestershire, with ice axes used by Theodore Howard Somervell, OBE, FRCS (British 1890-1975).Both ice axes were used by TH Somervell during the 1924 expedition to Mount Everest, one with impressed marks Gebr Willisch, Tasch-Zermatt, Schweiz, L84cm, the other with impressed marks Gebr Andenmatten, Saas- Almagel-Schweiz and Marke Mischabel verso, L88cm. This model of axe is understood to have been given to each member of Somervell's team; it is also the same model of axe which Mallory used on his ill fated 1922 Everest expedition, which was later found on Everest and went on to sell at Christie's in April 2014 for $240,000 CAD. The axes are expected to make £2000-£4000 L84cm, £3000-£5000 L88cm at the Toys, Vinyl Records, Musical Instruments, Asian and Tribal Art, Picture Books, Ephemera and Stamps auction at Stroud Auction Rooms, January 12th-13th 2022.
